The Sydney-based operator has partnered with Vivo Tower Ltd, an “international casino marketing agency,”which is tasked with ferrying high-value VIP clients from “Macau, Hong Kong, Malaysia and elsewhere” to Star Vegas.

Star Vegas is in Poipet, a town near Cambodia’s border with Thailand. The latter country’s military coup of 2014 toppled the democratically elected government which was replaced by a military junta that immediately began an authoritarian crackdown on the country’s illegal casinos and gambling dens.

That sucked for Thailand’s illegal casinos and gambling dens but it was a positive move for Poipet. The “Poipet Strip” contains nine smallish casinos, situated in a kind of gambling no man’s land between the Cambodian and Thai passport control counters.

International Ambitions

According to Donaco, currently 90 percent of Star Vegas customers are from Thailand, and the company is eager to attract high rollers from further afield.

It dumped its previous junket operator, Heng Sheng, of Macau, earlier this year, because its exclusivity deals on certain countries and regions were limiting the field for Star Vegas, preventing it from working with other junkets.

Vivo Tower had already engaged a Malaysian junket operator Da Kim Global Group which will begin organizing VIP trips to Poipet from July 1.

Star Vegas is preparing to host its first ever stop of an international poker tour, the Asian Poker Tour (APT) Southeast Asia 2017 on the very same say, and Donaco said it was planning to fly in a very different kind of VIP for the momentous event.

Man United Deal

The company signed a three-year sponsorship deal with Manchester United in 2015, which saw it become the “exclusive casino resort partner” of the football club in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and South Korea, where the team enjoys an avid following.

Donaco promises that some famous faces from the fabled Man Utd “Class of ’92” will be present when the poker players descend on the Star Vegas for the APT event, which will also mark the opening of the casino’s new poker room.

No names yet, but the ’92 team included the like of David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

“The purpose of the Manchester United partnership is to increase awareness and visitation of Donaco’s Star Vegas property for the target market of middle class Thai visitors, as well as signifying the quality of the property for international visitors,” said Donaco.
