Mariah Carey and partner, James Packer, the Australian gambling mogul, are reportedly set to marry on a Caribbean island this summer.

The celebrity pair got engaged before New Year, but so far a wedding venue has yet to be decided. This week, TMZ claimed that the couple will tie the knot on the island of Barbuda.

It’s no wonder that the island has been chosen. Billionaire Packer is currently developing a multi-million dollar resort there with Hollywood chum, Robert de Niro. The wedding is set to be a small affair, with just a handful of guests invited.

Stars Engaged After Whirlwind Romance

The celebrity pair were first seen together while on holiday in Italy last year. The couple seemed happy to have their photos taken in a rare show of public affection on Packer’s part.

It’s believed they met through Brett Ratner, and there are still talks about a Mariah Carey-led musical. Given the diva’s past cinematic disasters, however, it’s not known whether the new film will be stuck in perpetual development hell.

Hollywood On the Guest List

While it’s too early for invites to be sent out, it’s probably fair to speculate who will be among the 50 invited guests. Packer’s Hollywood ties go beyond buddying up with de Niro, and the guestlist could well include several film industry bigwigs.

His RatPac Entertainment venture, launched in partnership with American producer and director, Brett Ratner, has led him to mix with the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese. The pair, along with de Niro, were involved in making a promotional film for the launch of Studio City in Macau.

Packer, as part of his interests in Melco Crown, was heavily involved in the development of Macau’s newest casino resort. Studio City has a big Hollywood theme, coming complete with Gotham-inspired décor and a huge cinema-theatre. Even Packer’s fiancée turned up to churn out a few hits at the casino’s opening ceremony.

Divorces To Be Finalised

Before the wedding can happen, there’s the small matter of both Carey and Packer completing divorces to their respective exes.

Packer’s marriage to Erica Packer ended after six years. The pair, who have three children, had only just moved into a $50 million mansion when the split was announced. They are believed to have a multi-million dollar pre-nuptial agreement in place which should come into play once the divorce goes through.

The Packers’ 2007 wedding cost a reputed $6 million and featured sports stars and Hollywood stars among the attendees. The Crown bigwig was also married to Aussie model, Jodhi Meares, for three years.

Carey, meanwhile, has yet to complete her divorce to the comedian, Nick Cannon. The pair filed for divorce two years ago. Like the Packers, they felt the six-year itch and broke up. They have 4-year-old twins from the marriage.

After what will surely be a couple of expensive divorces, the new Packer couple should have a bit left over for a fairly lavish wedding. James Packer is worth over AUD6 billion according to the latest Forbes Rich List while Carey has a fortune worth around $520 million. That should keep the 50 guests in vol-au-vents and Cava for a good few hours.
